The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that evaluates the quality and safety of care for more than 16,000 health care organizations. To maintain and earn accreditation, organizations must have an extensive on-site review by a team of Joint Commission health care professionals, at least once every three years. The purpose of the review is to evaluate the organization's performance in areas that affect patient care. Accreditation may then be awarded based on how well the organizations met Joint Commission standards. Their ultimate mission is to continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in health care organizations.

Methodist Hospital is the only hospital in San Antonio to receive the American Stroke Association's Get With The GuidelinesSM-Stroke (GWTG-Stroke) Bronze Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes Methodist Hospitals' commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

The Chest Pain Center at Methodist Hospital has demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Key areas in which a Chest Pain Center must demonstrate expertise include:

• Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system
• Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly
• Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
• Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
• Ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training
• Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
• Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care
• Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack

Methodist Healthcare hospitals are the first in the United States to be officially accredited as Hispanic Healthcare Hospitals by the Diversity Health Care Program of Mexico. Designation as Hispanic Healthcare Hospitals means that Methodist Healthcare is poised to better meet the needs of our local and regional Hispanic population and to enhance the service level for the growing international patient population. This accreditation, which Methodist must seek annually, requires a commitment to continuous improvement. The ultimate goal is to enhance the quality of health care services available to our diverse patient population and improve outcomes.

Since 1998, HealthGrades has studied and measured the quality of care at the nation's 5,000 hospitals and published the results of its annual research on the Web to assist consumers in choosing a hospital. In this report, HealthGrades examines risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates among the nation's hospitals, assesses the differences between best-performing and worst-performing hospitals, and evaluates the performance of individual states across 14 service areas.

In this year's study, HealthGrades analyzed approximately 40 million Medicare discharges from almost every U.S. hospital from 2007 through 2009. We also expanded our analysis to evaluate the impact of inhospital performance on all cause mortality at 30 days and 180 days following hospitalization. The National Research Corporation conducts a monthly survey of primary health care decision makers in San Antonio to determine their preference for one or more health care provides over another (as indicated by Most Preferred for All Health Needs), and the perception of care they believe is present (measured as hospitals with the Best Nurses, Best Doctors, Best Overall Quality, Best Image/Reputation.). The standard error range for this survey is ± 4.1 percent at the 95 percent confidence level. To ensure proper sample representation, the data was weighted according to a number of key demographic variables: Age of Head of Household, Area Population, Household Income, Race, Presence of Children and Marital Status.
